成体黄金河虎（dorados），像几乎所有脂鲤科的其他成员，成熟的雄性可以通过发达的腹鳍及臀鳍的钩子而确定。

利马和britski（2007）检查发现所有成熟的S. franciscanus有翅钩是男性标本。

Sexual Dimorphism
Adult dorados, like nearly all other members of Characidae, are sexually dimorphic. Mature males can be identified by the presence of well developed hooks on the pelvic and anal fins. Lima and Britski (2007) found all examined mature S. franciscanus to posses fin hooks to be male specimens.
